Art Dealer
Definition: An art dealer is a professional who buys, sells, or facilitates the sale of artworks. Dealers may operate independently or through commercial galleries, and they often represent living artists — helping to build their markets, place works in collections, and promote exhibitions or publications.
Dealers play a central role in the primary market, guiding price structure, collector relationships, and institutional placements. In the secondary market, dealers act as intermediaries, brokers, or private sellers who handle resale transactions, often sourcing works for collectors, estates, or auction consignment.
Reputable dealers are known for their deep knowledge of specific artists, movements, or media. They may also coordinate framing, shipping, authentication, and condition management — or work closely with art advisors and consultants.
The term can overlap with gallerist or consultant, but generally refers to professionals engaged directly in the business of selling art. Major dealers may participate in fairs like Art Basel and often hold long-standing relationships with collectors, curators, and institutions.
