What is an Artist Proof (AP)?

← Back to Art Glossary

Definition: An Artist Proof (abbreviated AP) is a print that falls outside the numbered edition of an artwork, typically reserved for the artist's personal use or approval. Historically used to evaluate quality, artist proofs are now commonly included as part of the publishing process and are usually marked "AP" in place of a number.

While identical in appearance to the standard edition, artist proofs are often seen as more exclusive and may command higher value. The number of APs produced is typically limited to a small percentage (e.g., 10%) of the edition size.
