Exhibition

← Back to Art Glossary

Definition:
An exhibition is a curated presentation of artworks shown in a public or private space such as a gallery, museum, fair, or online platform. Exhibitions serve to introduce artists to the public, contextualize themes, build critical dialogue, and often catalyze sales or institutional acquisitions.

There are several types of exhibitions:

  • Solo Exhibition – focused on one artist’s body of work
  • Group Exhibition – features multiple artists around a common theme
  • Retrospective – surveys an artist’s full career
  • Biennial or Triennial – large-scale, recurring international showcases

Exhibitions may be commercial (sales-driven) or institutional (non-profit, research-based). Critical reviews, visitor engagement, and curatorial framing can all influence the reception and legacy of a show. Exhibition history also plays a significant role in an artist’s CV and collector confidence.
