Framing

← Back to Art Glossary

Definition: Framing refers to the process of mounting, enclosing, and presenting artworks — such as paintings, drawings, prints, or photographs — using external support structures. Frames serve both aesthetic and protective functions, safeguarding works from dust, UV exposure, handling, and humidity.

Professional framing involves choices in moldings, mats, glazing (glass or acrylic), and backing materials. Museums typically use archival, reversible methods with conservation-grade materials. For contemporary collectors, framing is also an extension of display design and interior aesthetics.

Good framing can elevate the perceived value of a work and is often an essential consideration in exhibitions, sales, and long-term storage.
