Japonisme
Definition: Japonisme is the term used to describe the influence of Japanese art, design, and aesthetics on Western culture, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Following Japan’s reopening to the West, artists in Europe and America became captivated by ukiyo-e prints, calligraphy, ceramics, and minimalistic design.
Artists like Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and James McNeill Whistler incorporated Japanese compositional strategies, flattened space, and nature motifs into their work — contributing to Impressionism, Art Nouveau, and Modernism.
