Outsider Art

← Back to Art Glossary

Definition: Outsider art describes works by artists who operate outside the established art scene — often self-taught, neurodivergent, or from marginalized communities. The term is closely tied to French artist Jean Dubuffet’s concept of "Art Brut."

Outsider artists are valued for their raw expression, unique perspectives, and lack of formal influence. Notable figures include Henry Darger, Bill Traylor, Judith Scott, and Martín Ramírez. Major fairs like the Outsider Art Fair and institutions like the American Folk Art Museum showcase such work.
