What is a Condition Report?
Definition: A condition report is a formal document that details the physical state of an artwork at a given time. It’s typically prepared by a conservator, auction house specialist, registrar, or qualified art handler, and may accompany works in exhibitions, auctions, sales, or during transport and insurance coverage.
The report includes information such as the medium, dimensions, support material, framing, and any signs of damage, restoration, fading, discoloration, cracking, or wear. High-resolution photographs are often included to provide visual reference.
Condition reports protect buyers and sellers by disclosing any known flaws or conservation history, helping to establish appropriate value, insurance coverage, or potential risks. They are especially important in the resale market, where condition can significantly influence price and buyer confidence.
