Generative Art

← Back to Art Glossary

Definition: Generative art is a form of digital or computational art created using systems that operate independently from the artist’s direct hand — including algorithms, code, and rule-based logic. It emphasizes the process of creation as much as the final product.

Generative artists write code that produces visual outcomes, often resulting in unpredictable, evolving, or interactive forms. Works may exist as digital files, NFT-based tokens, prints, installations, or live simulations.

Pioneers in this space include Vera Molnar, Harold Cohen (creator of AARON), and Casey Reas. Generative art has seen renewed relevance in the blockchain era, with platforms like Art Blocks popularizing coded art drops for collectors.
