Anish Kapoor

"Artists don't make objects. Artists make mythologies."

Indian,  b. 1954

Born in Bombay (now Mumbai),  Anish Kapoor emerged as a leading figure in contemporary sculpture. His childhood was split between India and Britain, exposing him to diverse cultural influences. He studied at the Chelsea School of Art and later Hornsey College of Art in London, where he embraced a minimalist aesthetic.

Kapoor's artistic journey took a pivotal turn when he began experimenting with unconventional materials like fiberglass, resin, and pigments like the now-famous "Vantablack" – the blackest black ever created. These materials allowed him to push the boundaries of form and scale.

His sculptures are known for their monumentality, sensuality, and exploration of space. Works like the towering red "Cloud Gate" in Chicago, which reflects and distorts the city skyline, and the vaginal-shaped "My Red Homeland" (later destroyed by vandals), sparked controversy and debate. Kapoor reveled in pushing boundaries, using form and material to evoke a range of emotions in viewers.

Kapoor's artistic influence extends beyond his sculptures. He has designed stage sets, collaborated with architects, and continues to push the boundaries of artistic expression. His work is exhibited worldwide, solidifying his place as a leading innovator in contemporary sculpture
