Salvador Dalí's "Anti-Umbrella with Atomized Liquid" (1975-1976) is a lithograph included within his "Imagination & Objects of the Future" portfolio. The work depicts a non-functional umbrella design. It features a skeletal structure composed of thin poles, lacking the traditional fabric canopy. Instead, the title alludes to a mysterious "atomized liquid" that appears to be sprayed upwards from the umbrella's apex. This liquid forms a protective bubble around the figure beneath it, defying the traditional purpose of an umbrella.
The work is a prime example of Surrealism's influence on Dalí, employing illogical elements – a mist repelling rain – to create a dreamlike quality.
The specific properties of the liquid and its source remain ambiguous within the artwork.
This ambiguity, along with the fantastical design, invites interpretation. "Anti-Umbrella with Atomized Liquid" can be viewed as a commentary on potential future technologies or a whimsical exploration of form and function.
