Breathing Pneumatic Armchair (Imagination & Objects of the Future Portfolio), 1975-1976
This striking lithograph exemplifies Salvador Dalí's surrealist vision during his later career period. Created in 1975-76 as part of his "Imagination & Objects of the Future Portfolio," this work represents Dalí's whimsical reimagining of everyday objects through his distinctive surrealist lens.
"Breathing Pneumatic Armchair" depicts a plush armchair that transcends conventional furniture design. The chair retains a vaguely human-like quality with suggested arms and a headrest, while transparent tubes snake across its surface, implying an internal respiratory system. The chair appears to float on wispy clouds, defying gravity against a swirling background reminiscent of Dalí's famous melting timepieces.
This piece reflects Dalí's continued fascination with the subconscious and the blurred boundaries between dreams and reality. The chair serves as both a practical invention and a surreal fantasy, inviting viewers to contemplate a future where furniture becomes an extension of the human body, breathing in harmony with its occupant.
The work comes from the International edition of 250 (from a total edition of 600) and is hand-signed "Dalí" in pencil within the image and numbered by the artist. Its authenticity has been confirmed by Bruce Hochman OS, the leading authority on Salvador Dalí's artwork, and a certificate of authenticity will be included with purchase.
