About The Artwork

Gypsy Song, 2010, is a Japanese woodcut in Ukiyo-e style on paper from an edition of 50, with this being an artist's proof. This work showcases Nara's signature imagery through the traditional Japanese woodblock printing technique, creating a bridge between contemporary art and historical Japanese printmaking traditions.

Printed by master printer Yasu Shibata at the Pace Editions Workshop, this ukiyo-e woodcut presents Nara's iconic figure with her characteristic wide eyes and expressive features. The print was produced as an artist's proof aside from a limited edition of 50, with each print personally signed and numbered by the artist.

This print represents a significant convergence of contemporary visual language with traditional Japanese printmaking techniques. Nara's choice to work with master printer Yasu Shibata in the ukiyo-e tradition connects his practice to Japan's rich artistic heritage while maintaining his distinctive contemporary style.

The artist rose to international prominence in the 1990s with his deceptively simple style that contrasts childlike innocence with complex emotional undertones of alienation, rebellion, and melancholy. His work resonates with audiences worldwide through its accessibility and emotional depth, establishing him as one of Japan's most recognized contemporary artists.
